Treasure in Texas! Finding family history clues

I’m a third generation native Las Vegan. With a few years of exceptions for schooling and mission service, my father has lived his entire life in Las Vegas, like his father before him.

And yet I had to go to Houston to find this treasure!

Richard Charles Hicks 1960

This is the program for my Dad’s missionary farewell Church service in 1960!! Isn’t he handsome?!? He served as a young missionary in Austria for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1960-1962.

I can’t believe I’ve never seen this before.

My grandmother passed away in 2014, three months shy of her 101st birthday. (She definitely deserves her own blog post another time.) So when her treasures were shared among family members, a small wooden music box my brother received held this piece of family history. And I unexpectedly found this yellowed trifold parchment in his baby daughter’s bathroom as I had the fun job of brushing the sweet, fine baby hair after her bath.

You never know what you’ll find, even 1,500 miles from our family history’s homebase.

I took pictures of this treasure and left the original for my brother. I’m so grateful for technology! This little piece of history is an important part of Dad’s tale. I love how the relationships are detailed for everyone on the program- so helpful! I added it to my growing collection of family treasures, and now I’ll keep my eyes open wider, even in unexpected places half a country away.

Don’t leave your tale untold…
